The anti-Development State:
The Political Economy of Permanent Crisis in the Philippines

Pakway System: A New Face of Labor Contractualization

Mariani: A Woman of a Kind
To Suffer Thy Comrades

The Lumad's Struggle in the Face of Globalization
Today, the struggle of the indigenous peoples of Mindanao for self-determination goes on amidst a new global order imposed by western economic powers. The identity and cultural heritage of the indigenous people are being disintegrated by global media and instant communication even as their ancestral domains are subjected to relentless aggression of global capital in search of superprofits. In the mountains of Mindanao, the B'laans, Subanens, T'bolis, Manobos and other Lumad tribes continue to fiercely defend their ancestral domain against global mining companies. This publication serves as a valuable resource in examining all the issues affecting them.

Making the Difference - Through Muslim Volunteering
A book with stories of young Muslim volunteers working to promote peace through development work among grassroots communities in different parts of Mindanao. Their efforts, as told in this book, may seem small compared to the enormity and complexity of the Mindanao conflict. But they have made a tremendous impact on the lives of the people who they have touched. It is efforts like these - simple deeds that touch ordinary lives - that make lasting contributions to peace.

Glossy paper with loss of colored pictures, 85 pages.
Price € 5,00 (excl. porto)

Under the Crescent Moon: Rebellion in Mindanao
The story of Mindanao is much more than a story of war. But war's very persistence on the island suggests that the peace and progress Mindanaoans crave- Muslims, Christians and Lumads- cannot be reached without revisiting the sources of conflict and retracing its tortuous path to the present. This book is an exhaustively researched, evenhanded, and briskly written report, a sifted mass of detail that often reads like a political thriller. To read it is to begin to understand what Manila, Mindanao, Malaysia and Mecca have integrally to do with one another.

Into the Mountain: Hostaged by the Abu Sayyaf
This book tells the haunting experiences of Father Rhoel and many others in the hands of the Abu Sayyaf in March 2000. It humanizes the victims and perpetrators and makes a place come alive as few non-fiction books about the Philippines have done. Reading it, is to understand the human dimensions of the drama and the role of the national government and the military play in this conflict. The book dispels the notion that deep resentment between the Muslims and the Christians is mainly responsible for the rise of groups like the Abu Sayyaf. The author succeeds in unraveling some of the ambiguity surrounding a very difficult subject. "Into the Mountain" is the hostages' story, and it is a story that deserves to have been told this well.

Minding Mining! Lessons from the Philippines
The book takes a closer look at who is really benefiting from mining and at what cost. Amidst the chorus of claims from the industry and the government that mining is good for the communities and the economy, the outcry from communities where mining takes place shows that it rarely translates into sustainable and tangible benefits for them. Only when the social and environmental cost are accounted for can the benefits truly be weighed.

The Bibingka Strategy in Land Reform Implementation:
Autonomous Peasant Movements and State Reformists in the Philippines
The book lays out a strategy for achieving gains in the area of land reform based on cooperation between reformers in government at different levels and reformers outside government, especially autonomous peasant organizations. The book is the revised and edited version of the masteral thesis of Jun Borras for his Master of Arts in Development Studies (with specialization in Agriculture and Rural Development), at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague, the Netherlands in December 1997. Benjamin White, Professor of Rural Sociology (ISS) and Editor of Development and Change comments: "The author is to be congratulated on this excellent, innovative and well-written study of cases of successful land reform implementation in a politically hostile environment, which incorporates new empirical materials, is theoretically well-grounded and consistently well-written...The main strength and uniqueness of this paper lies in the author's skilful analysis of five local studies of successful or partly-successful land reform implementation in lowland communities of Central and Southern Luzon and Mindanao. The result is a unique, innovative and important analysis which makes an important addition to the complex debates on Philippine land reform implementation, and also to the more general debates on peasant mobilizations."

Her Story
This book describes the historical roots of involuntary disappearance in the Philippines and tells about the principles, efforts and concrete activities of FIND. The foreword relates: "Her Story is a mirror of the struggle of our dearly beloved desaparecidos' mothers, wives and daughters who are left behind to pick up the broken pieces of their families, in order to make their disintegrated families whole again. The book also reflects the ideals of our desaparecidas who offered their lives so that their children may live. Her Story reflects the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties, the dreams and aspirations of all families and friends of the victims. It humbly attempts to trace the footsteps of our organization as she was treading the road less traveled... as she continues to march through the journey towards justice, peace and freedom."

The Philippine Fisheries
The Philippines' territorial waters are about seven times its land area. The marine biodiversity is the richest in the world with around 2,500 fish species. Fish production ranks third in Asia and eleventh in the world. The ecological effects are disastrous: coral reefs and mangroves are in various stages of deterioration, major rivers and lakes are dying because of unrestrained dumping and the use of overefficient fishing methods by large fishing magnates results in rapid production decline. The fisherfolk and coastal communities are among the most impoverished in the country. The book elaborates on the sector in four chapters covering a profile, the production, post-harvest and processing and government programs and policies. With tables and illustrations.
